The Shanghai update of Ethereum (ETH), the leading smart contract platform, scheduled to go live in the first quarter of 2023, will bring staking to the ETH protocol. The update is stated to have the potential to be an important growth catalyst for staking protocols such as Lido (LDO).
As of the current location, once Ethereum is staked, there is no way to get it back. However, with the upcoming Shanghai update, the highest priority will be given to the ability to withdraw staked Ethereum. It was suggested that this would minimize risk for long-term holders who have staked their Ethereum since Beacon Chain went live in December 2020.
At the time of writing, the staking rate of ETH is lower compared to other protocols such as Binance Coin (BNB), Cardano (ADA) and Solana (SOL).
