The cyber police of Ukraine exposed two college students who distributed and sold the malware for the hidden cryptocurrency mining. The virus infects the victim’s PC, and afterward uses the processor’s power for the remote mining. The Department of Cyberpolice of the National Police of Ukraine informs about the case on its Facebook page.
Cyber police investigators managed to detect that the students had purchased malware on one of the hacker forums. After modifying it, they offered malware to the interested individuals.
Besides selling the virus, students used it for their own needs. They placed the link to the fake software on the forums and other Internet resources, and after installation mined cryptocurrency remotely.
Ukrainian hackers do not trail far behind, and this is not the first case we are reporting. This is not strange if we refer to the research from the Palo Alto Networks. It defined that hackers mined at least 5% of all existing Monero coins through the loaded dice.
According to the latest report by WatchGuard Technologies, the threat from the malware hackers is increasing and can become the primary form of hacker attacks in the near future. It is estimated that this kind of attacks will be in the top-10 cyber threats to the end of this year.
As for the student hackers, the police has carried out the sanctioned searches at their places. During the preliminary inspection, the police technicians found the malware.
At the moment, the police define the number of infected PCs. The exposed equipment was directed to the expert center for the technical expertise,
- the FB post states.
The criminal proceedings have been started, and the two “inventors” were declared suspects. They can be imprisoned for up to five years.
